Why Working Harder From the Wrong State Makes Everything Worse

Sep 03, 2026

For three years, I worked harder than I ever had in my life.

I took on the bookkeeping myself to cut costs. I opened on Saturdays to increase revenue. I pushed through exhaustion, through fear, through months of sleepless nights. I showed up every single day and gave everything I had.

And the debt grew anyway.

It was not until I finally understood what was happening in my brain that I realized the terrible, humbling truth: working harder from the wrong mental state does not just fail to produce results. It actively prevents them.

What Stress Actually Does to Your Thinking

When you are operating from chronic stress and anxiety — when cortisol is elevated and your nervous system is in survival mode — the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain responsible for creative problem-solving, strategic thinking, and seeing the bigger picture, goes partially offline.

You are still functioning. You are still working. But you are working from a fraction of your actual cognitive capacity, filtered entirely through the lens of the problem. Your RAS — your brain's filtering system — is set to scan for more evidence of everything that is going wrong. And it finds it, faithfully, while the solutions sit just outside the filter.

I was not failing because I was not working hard enough. I was failing because I was accidentally instructing my brain to find proof of failure — and it was doing exactly what I told it to do.

"The solution was never more effort. It was a completely different state to work from. And state is something you can actually choose."

The Shift That Changed Everything

When I finally built a consistent morning routine — when I started showing up for my own brain chemistry before the day started, before the emails arrived, before the fear had a chance to set the tone — something changed.

Not the circumstances. The circumstances were the same. The debt was still real. The creditors were still calling. The pressure had not eased.

But I started noticing what was going right. I started catching my team doing good work and saying so. I started asking different questions — not why is this so hard but what could I do differently today. And my brain, given new instructions, began finding answers it had never been able to surface before.

The same opportunities had been available to me for three years. I simply could not see them — until I changed the state I was working from.

This Is Not Toxic Positivity

I want to be clear about something, because this is often misunderstood. I am not talking about pretending everything is fine when it is not. I am not talking about forcing a smile while ignoring real problems.

I am talking about neuroscience. About the chemical reality that your brain functions at a measurably higher capacity when you deliberately manage your emotional state — and that the work you do from that higher-functioning state produces genuinely different results than the same effort applied from fear and scarcity.

Hard work matters. Effort matters. But the state you bring to that effort determines what it can actually produce.

Work smarter by working from green. Your brain will do the rest.
