Judgment Keeps You Stuck. Curiosity Sets You Free.

Sep 22, 2026

There is a voice most of us have been living with for so long that we have stopped noticing it is there.

That was stupid. You should have known better. Why do you always do this? What is wrong with you?

We call it holding ourselves accountable. We think it is what keeps us from repeating our mistakes. We have been taught, in countless subtle and not-so-subtle ways, that self-criticism is the path to self-improvement.

It is not. And neuroscience has the receipts.

What Judgment Actually Does

When you judge yourself — when you run the internal criticism loop — cortisol rises. The part of your brain responsible for creative problem-solving goes partially offline. Your Reticular Activating System locks onto proof that the judgment is correct and filters out everything that contradicts it.

You feel bad. Your confidence drops. And your brain is given absolutely no useful instruction about what to do differently next time.

Judgment is not accountability. It is the loop running on itself, consuming energy and producing nothing except more evidence of the problem.

"You cannot judge yourself and love yourself at the same time. And the one you choose determines what your brain is able to see next."

What Curiosity Does Instead

The neurological opposite of judgment is curiosity — and the shift between them is often just one question.

Instead of what is wrong with me — try: what could I do differently next time?

That single shift changes everything your brain does next. In my book I go deep into exactly how to make this shift in real time — including the specific tools that make curiosity your default instead of judgment.

If this resonates, I think you are going to love what is waiting for you inside Stop Shoulding Yourself.

I am Dr. Lucette Beall — veterinarian, speaker, and creator of the B.R.A.I.N. Reset Method. My book Stop Shoulding Yourself will be available soon.

Where in your life are you using judgment when curiosity would serve you better? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
